Chairman of Vin Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov has announced the closure of the “Gate of Hell” abyss in the Karachi Desert, which has been burning for decades. “We are losing important natural resources that can make a significant profit to improve the well-being of the people,” the president was quoted as saying on television by the BBC. Citing health and environmental problems, the Turkmen leader instructed technicians to “find a solution to put out the fire.” Among Turkmenistan’s major tourist attractions, the Darwaza Gorge remains a mystery.
According to Turkmen geologists, it was created in the 1960s, but it was not until the 1980s that it began to erupt. Some accuse the 1971 Soviet operation of ending badly, but it is not yet clear when the “Gate of Hell” began to burn. This is the second time since 2010 that President Bertimugamotov has ordered experts to find a way to put out the blaze.
